Working out and going to the gym is a great activity to introduce to a troubled teen. Not only does this emphasize the importance of keeping your teen’s body in good health, but it also gives your teen an endorphin boost that will keep your teen thinking positive. At the beginning, your teen may feel hesitant to join the group or go to the gym but after that initial try he/she will begin to feel more and more comfortable in the environment. It’s normal for an adolescent to feel embarrassed to be moving around in a body which is going through its own stages of development as he/she progresses into adolescence.
Be more comfortable in your own body Working out will actually make your teen feel more comfortable in his/her own body during what has been called an ‘awkward’ stage of human growth. Sooner or later your teen won’t be feeling so shy doing those lunges or hard-to-reach stretches, he/she will be having too much fun to notice. His/her body may tend to ache during that first week if your teen isn’t particularly active but the way to get it to stop feeling sore is to come back for some more. Yes, the more your teen works out and becomes more physically active, the stronger he/she will become. Why not make it a family event and all come to the gym together? This gives the family quality time together and a wholesome, healthy activity to bond over. Working-out can be a social event But even if you can’t go to the gym with your teen, encourage him/her to go by for a work out. This activity may prove to be particularly useful for a teen that you see sulking at home alone. The gym is a great place to meet other teenagers. Yes, it’s not just for your physical health but it can be seen as a social activity as well. There is an impressive array of classes being offered at the majority of gyms out there. Various dance sessions may be offered to even boxing classes or yoga. All of these sessions are great opportunities to hang out with and get to know other teens. Start the day right Coming home from a gym session can leave your teen feeling revitalized and energized. Maybe even starting the day with a work-out before he/she goes off to school can be just what your teen needs to start the day right. When you are dealing with a teenager with self-image issues, starting him/her off by introducing a work-out program shows a teen the importance of taking care of him/herself. |
