Once the month of June starts nearing you may be getting nervous about your teen’s summer vacation. No classes and tons of free time on your teenager’s hands can mean a whole lot of mess if he/she doesn’t find a better way to occupy him/herself than discovering new things to mess around with at home. On the other hand, you may also be worried about not even knowing where your teen may be as he/she is out constantly hanging around with groups of friends you may never even have met. Planning out some activities for your teen’s summer vacation is not a bad idea. Activities for you and your teen Why not play some sports together, whatever sport appeals to your teen, and include his/her friends in the game. Taking a stroll through the park everyday would be nice to get some fresh air. Ask your teen about what language he/she has been dying to learn and enroll with him/her. This way when you practice, you both have a conversation partner and you’ll have a blast laughing to the funny sounds that may come out of your mouths. This is a way to encourage bonding between the two of you. Another good idea is to work outdoors. You could plan a backyard transformation. Planting flowers and fixing up the greenery will leave you and your teen with an overwhelming feeling of satisfaction once you both see the result of the hard work. Try something new together Learning something new is always a great opportunity for quality time between parent and child. Find out what your teen may be interested and saddle up with him/her. If your teen wants some friends to come along, let them. Doing volunteer work is also a great idea for you and your teen. The satisfaction of giving back to the community will definitely leave your teen with a fresh breath of life in his/her lungs. Check out the various volunteer stations that are near your community. Studies have shown that teenagers that participate in family activities do not tend towards self-destructive behaviors. Encourage your teen to get a summer job If your teens are bored out of their minds come summer time, you’ll be doing them a favor by finding them activities that they may enjoy or better yet, you could even encourage them to get a summer job. Job!?! How can I get my teen to even try to apply for a summer job? Well, it won’t be as a hard as it may seem to encourage them to try working during the break because many teens very much enjoy the extra cash that they can keep handy because of it. Finding a summer job that interests them is a definite plus because they’ll enjoy their work environment while earning as well. |
