Opiates E-mail

Troubled teenagers abusing opiates may experience two general effects— a decrease in anxiety and at the same time drowsiness or sleepiness. Opiates actually fall under the type of drugs known as downers or depressants. Opium, morphine, strong painkillers such as Demerol or fentanyl, heroin, codeine, and methadone, are all kinds of opiates. As you may have learned, morphine (an active component of opium) is used in the medical field as a painkiller in controlled doses. Codeine, compared to morphine, has a weaker effect on the body. Methadone, compared to heroin, also has a weaker effect on the body.

Opium

Opium may go by the street names O, gong, or Chinese molasses. This drug is normally smoked, but it may also be injected or snorted. It comes from poppy seeds and is an illegal substance. Teenage drug users in studies concerning opium have described the drug to cause an intense blissful rush, followed by a dreamlike condition which is accompanied by decreased pain sensitivity. What is very critical about this drug is that it can be deadly with just one try because of an elevated risk of overdose. The risk of overdose is greater if the drug is injected, yet this may also occur from smoking or snorting as well. If a deadly overdose occurs, your teenager’s breathing will slow down until it may even stop all together. A teen abusing opium may have skin irritations wherein the skin feels dry to the touch and may have itchy sensations. You may notice that his/her pupils are pinpointed and if your teenager is a female then a delay in her menstrual cycle may occur as well. Nausea, a decrease in sex drive, vomiting, or recurring constipation, are all possible effects of the drug. Opium can be highly addictive and the withdrawal symptoms one must undertake are very hard to deal with. If your teenager were to combine this substance with alcohol or a substance such as Valium, the effects could be immediately adverse.

Heroin

Heroin may go by the street names smack, mojo, horse, junk, or kag. This drug is often injected straight into one’s veins in areas such as the legs or arms, but other areas such as the neck and even groin or penis may also be used when easily accessed veins have been abused. Injection is common because of the powerful high it brings about, compared to cooking the substance and smoking or snorting it. Heroin is actually made from the poppy plant used in opium, yet this drug utilizes the dried ‘milk’ of the plant. The drug itself is illegal in the USA, yet may still be utilized in a number of countries in Europe like the United Kingdom as a pain reliever for those suffering from cancer.
