Sexually Transmitted Diseases

The following are sexually transmitted diseases that your troubled teenager may become exposed to:

Gonorrhea
  • It is a bacterial infection which has also been called “the clap.”
  • It can be transmitted through oral, anal, or vaginal sex.
  • Males may experience painful urination and a discharge. Females may experience swollen or sensitive labia and discharge as well. A sore throat may result from oral sex.
  • It may be treated with antibiotics
  • If left untreated, it may lead to sterility or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
Crabs
  • It is pubic lice which may also affect the armpits.
  • It may be acquired through contact with another, as well as off of clothes or bed sheets. Pets may also transmit the bug.
  • A person may experience mild to severe itching. Tiny drops of blood may be seen in the underwear.
  • It may be treated with medication from a doctor. All material which may have come in contact with the bugs must be washed.
Genital Herpes
  • Herpes may actually exist as Oral herpes (herpes simplex I) which become visible as cold sores/fever blisters in the area of the mouth, or Genital herpes (herpes simplex II) which become visible as painful sores in the genital area.
  • It may be transmitted through anal, oral, or genital contact with a herpes sore.
Genital Warts/Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
  • It is quite a common sexually transmitted disease which can lead to the development of warts in the genital area.
  • It may be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact or anal, oral, or vaginal sex.
Chlamydia
  • It is a bacterial infection which affects the genital area.
  • It may be acquired through anal, oral, or vaginal sex, as well as skin-to-skin contact.
  • It causes a burning sensation while urinating and may result in itchy genitals.
Hepatitis B
  • It is a virus which can lead to the detriment of the liver.
  • It may be spread by any bodily fluid, as well as saliva.
  • Symptoms include: jaundice, fatigue, vomiting, appetite loss, nausea, and rashes.
Syphilis
  • It is a bacterial sexually transmitted disease which affects the bloodstream and results in rashes or canker sores.
  • It may be transmitted through anal, oral, or vaginal sex. It may even be spread through kissing.
  • If untreated, the bacteria may cause rashes to appear, along with headache and fever.
To keep your troubled teenager safe from sexually transmitted diseases, it’s important for him/her to know what diseases he/she may acquire and how to prevent them.
