The Yellow Ribbon Campaign for Troubled Teens E-mail

On October 23, 2007 Le Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSNO) unveiled its Yellow Ribbon Campaign in almost 30 schools.

The Yellow Ribbon Campaign is meant to raise awareness about suicide in those students from seventh to twelfth grade. It is the campaign’s goal to make the warning signs of suicide known to these teenagers and make them aware of ways they can get help for themselves or their friends who may be even considering the idea of suicide.

An information booth will be placed in every school which joins in on the campaign. The student radio will also reveal a message written by each class about hope and positive thinking. Every adult within the school will also get a yellow ribbon. Every student gets a yellow card which they can use in different ways:

1. The card can be given to an adult in order to show that the student is in a negative state of mind and may need someone to talk to;

2. The card can be given to a friend to show that he is feeling negative and should speak with an adult about it;

3. The card can also be given to a friend in order for his friend to accompany him to speak with an adult

These special actions do not just last for that day. There will also be a reminder of the campaign to be announced on the student radio weekly. Every school will also be encouraged to choose a day of the week where the yellow ribbon will be worn by all the staff members as a reminder to the students that help is near.

Depression and self-harm can drive a teenager to the idea of suicide, but with the support of positive influences like good friends and family, he can push the thought of this away.

"Our staff has always been concerned with our students’ well-being and success. Our wish is for them to develop at all levels, have confidence in themselves and become agents of change in their society. We are always there to help them, especially during difficult periods. We hope that the message they will remember from the Yellow Ribbon Campaign is that It’s OK to ask for help," says the supportive CSNO Associate Director, Lyse-Anne Papineau.

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario came up with the Yellow Ribbon Campaign in partnership with the Club Richelieu Les Patriotes of Sudbury.
