From Fire to Faith: One teen's story of rising once more

A 16 year old teenager burns a school portable which was a functioning activity center for the students but finds solace in a Burnaby school which provides her with the individualized attention and respect that she, like many other teens, needs. This teenager has been through a lot and if one were to make a characterization of a troubled teenager’s life, you’d be surprised as to how much she has come out of. Sample characterizations taken from random troubled teenagers include rape, eating disorders, self-harm, depression, attempted suicide, teen pregnancy, and abortion all in one teen’s life. It may sound shocking but this is what some teenagers go through out there, and they do come out of it as well. Sometimes all it takes is the right atmosphere and the kind of school a teenager goes to can make worlds of difference.

Sometimes it’s that one crucial conversation a teen has with a loved-one before a big event that pushes the idea of self-harm out of his head. Art Therapy put to good use for Troubled Teens!

Tom Dorsey, a retired man of the arts in his 70s, has been diligently volunteering at Atlanta Public Schools’ East End Academy to help inspire troubled teenagers. The teenagers are either dropouts or those having problems with classes. Dorsey began to have ideas about reaching out to these teenagers as he began to recover from cancer while undergoing treatments. He wanted to guide these young adolescents who needed a role model. But most of all, a prime goal of his was to inspire. Using his own artwork, Dorsey inspires other teens to keep on going and hang on to their studies no matter how hard things get. As Dorsey recovered from cancer, he discovered a fruitful way of helping others while helping him self at the same time. Not only did he realize that he could use his art to inspire adolescents but he also gained from the feeling of reaching out to the teenagers.

"These are students that otherwise would have dropped out," says Nona Franklin, director of programs for Communities in Schools.

Teen Challenge was a very popular show in the 1960’s that featured real life stories about troubled teens. This program was the idea of a Pastor named David Wilkerson who conducted various rallies in the streets of  New York. Through this process he was successfully able to help troubled teens get help for their drug addiction and to get out of a gang.
