Diet drugs - 2006/08/24 23:18 I found a bottle of Metabolift in my daughter’s room recently. I searched on the internet and found out that this diet/weight-loss drug has been banned because of its harsh side-effects which may cause life-threatening heart palpitations and even seizure attacks. I’ve known that she has been conscious of her weight and appearance but I had no idea until recently that she was using this dangerous diet drug. I’m not even sure of how she acquired the bottle. I’m afraid that even if I have confiscated the drug from her, she may just as easily acquire another bottle. I can’t seem to get her to tell me where it came from.
What now?

Re:Diet drugs - 2006/08/24 23:20 Before awareness of Pro-Anorexia/Eating Disorder websites was acknowledged, there were quite a prolific number of sites being put up by eating disorder patients for others with eating disorders. The catch is that these sites weren’t there in order to help patients recover from the disorder but in order to help each other keep the sickness alive within. They offered tips to keep from being caught purging or fasting and also gave advice to keep the negative mindset strong within. It is good that these types of sites are now being blocked and kept from viewing, but it is very likely that your daughter may have learned about the drug as a ‘trade secret’ of pro-anorexics. This may have also been the way that she acquired it. To make sure that your teen does not continue to be in contact with pro-anorexics over the net, you may opt to find some way to monitor her web-use and even if you can only do this with your family computer at home, it may be helpful.

Re:Diet drugs - 2006/08/31 23:25 My daughter struggled with an eating disorder herself, and when I caught sight of some of these “Pro-anorexic” websites in the past I was disgusted. There aren’t as much of them now but I tried to keep myself “in the know” while my daughter was still being treated for her disorder and “Metabolift” was definitely a household name of diet drug among these pro-ana teens. Many troubled teenagers with anorexia seemed to swear by it. It angers me inside to think that instead of trading tips on healing that these teenagers are just sharing ways to keep the negativity alive! Its horrible. It’s a good thing that many of these types of websites are now being blocked.
