Teenage drinking - 2007/01/26 04:31 My duaghter is 16 and has been caught drinking a few times from both myself and the authorities. Last weekend, she was drinking and let another friend of hers who was drinking too, but did not appear as bad, drive her car and put it in the ditch. They called us and we got it out of the ditch with 1,000 of damage to car. No police were called but we are searching for the correct method of punishment. She is of course grounded but I want her to learn a lesson from this and I am concerned that grounding is only going to make her resentful and she will not learn anything. We are seriously thinking if we catch her drunk again, we will send her to a treatment center, risking her hating us but we do not want tosit idolly by. She is a good student, actually hangs with good kids from good families, but they are all making the worst decisions. Any thoughts

Re:Teenage drinking - 2007/01/29 09:55 Your concern that grounding your teenage daughter may just result in resentment instead of expanded understanding of proper behavior is a reasonable apprehension. If your daughter is dealing with alcoholism issues which go past simple happy go lucky drinking and actually have traits of addiction to a vice, a treatment center may be the wisest choice to make. You should make sure that you choose a treatment center which suits your teen the best. If you make this decision, you need not fear that your teen will come out of the center hating you. A genuine treatment center knows how to deal with this specific situation and can provide therapy and counseling for your teenager’s counter-reaction toward her being placed into the center to begin with. Help her make her own good decisions in the future by providing her with the proper guidance that she needs.
