Help for Troubled Teenagers Forum

eraser burns - 2007/05/19 01:31 My thirteen year old son showed me where he used a pencil eraser to burn three spots on his arm while he was in class yesterday. He wanted to know if they could become infected. I asked him why he did this and he said because he was bored. I have never heard of this before and I am very concerned. Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing? Should I be calling his doctor?

Re:eraser burns - 2007/05/19 13:21 Teenagers can experiment with a lot of things you might think of as crazy, especially when they're bored. The fact that your son is worried about his little 'experiment' getting infected means that he probably didn't have the intent of hurting himself but was just wanting to fool around. If your son's actions elevate further to dangerous self-harm, then you definitely should seek therapy for him. Right now, continue talking to him in order to feel out if he really was just fooling around or if there are deep-seated issues behind it. This will give you the upper hand, in order to catch your teen before serious self-harm does.
