Eating Disorder relapse - 2006/08/21 10:59 My daughter has struggled with anorexia nervosa since her freshmen year in high school. This developed into bulimia after which we sought out professional help and she underwent psychotherapy. Her weight stabilized for a year and a half, but now in her senior year I’ve been noticing signs of her old self-destructive ED habits. Sometimes after meals she would rush off to her room to be alone and turn the music on high. I’ve got a gut feeling that she might be inducing vomit or purging. But because I know that she has only been newly recovered I’m hesitant to accuse her of returning to destructive habits only to find out that I’m wrong in the end. I’m scared that she may take this as signs of distrust and resent me for it. But I’m also scared that my gut feelings may be right and if so I want to be able to help her before the situation worsens. What do you think?

Re:Eating Disorder relapse - 2006/08/21 11:10 Parental gut feelings are normally correct. Her rushing off to her room after meals and turning on the music full blast, sounds very much like she could be purging and keeping the music high to mask sounds of inducing vomit. But it is correct of you to consider the fact that your daughter is in a delicate stage as she is freshly recovering from her disorder. It may be best to inform her psychotherapist of the recent signs you have been observing before accusing your teen of returning to her self-destructive ways. Seek her therapist’s advice as soon as possible in order to be able to decide on the next step.
