Help for Troubled Teenagers Forum

Help needed! - 2006/12/24 02:22 My teen is very troubled, she has been cutting her arms for some time, and at 16 got pregnant. At 6 months she lost the baby, and now she is openly defying me, stealing alcohol and sneaking boys into her room for me to catch them in the morning. I am getting her some counselling, but dont know how to discipline her for this, I know its not appropriate to throw her out, as I feel this is what she is pushing for when she really needs help, shes in a mess. Any advice on discipline?

Re:Help needed! - 2006/12/26 06:42 Your teenager's issue of self-harm should be addressed immediately. Concerning how she is openly defying you and sneaking boys in your house, these actions actually appear to be attention-getting cries for help. If she herself can't go out straight and say it, her actions are definitely yelling to you for some guidance. Regarding disciplining her, it is primarily important that she gets the therapy she needs. As she opens up more in therapy and begins the healing process (remember! cutting is just the outward effect of a much deeper inner issue) you should have more ease with her defiance. So just take things from there...
