Drug rehab - 2006/08/31 23:32 My daughter has just started dating a teenager who has recently been in a drug rehab center because of marijuana use. Of course, I’m worried to death! I know that maybe I’m not being fair to this boy because he isn’t a drug user now-- he’s someone who has survived drug use to tell the tale. But I can’t help it, I guess it’s the parental instincts. Just thinking about my daughter going out with someone who used to be involved with drugs in any way makes me quiver. I’m concerned. My daughter does not do any drugs and has never shown an interest in them, but I’m worried that dating this boy may give her ideas. Help!

Re:Drug rehab - 2006/08/31 23:37 Your worry is completely understandable because of the dating situation your daughter is in. The fact that this teenage boy your daughter is seeing is out of rehab is a good thing. A rehabilitation center would not have let him out unless he was stable enough to face the temptations of being outside again. Talk to your teen about her personal view on drugs to give you a better idea of what exactly she thinks. Of course, if the teenage boy goes into relapse you must explain to your daughter that letting him have space to heal is exactly what she needs to do to help.

Re:Drug rehab - 2007/03/11 21:12 I also have a 16 year old who just finished 30 days in rehab. I myself am a recovering addict! I have been sober for 2 years, I had 4 years befor that. I never thought that my drug addition would be anything that I would share with my child. But to get a better understanding of this young mans sickness you & your doughter should attaned some Teen Al-Anon meetings, & open AA meetings. That is the only way you will be able to understand how this all works. There is not one person I know that chooses to become an addict! It chooses you! The only thing that we can do is try to understand it! My doughter just had 50 days! That is HUGE! You need to understand that relaps is also a part of recovery, I did't understand that until I was the one who relapsed. the one thing that your doughter NEEDS to understand is that this will never go away! He will always be an addict! You don't out grow it, you are not cured becuz you went to treatment. Treatment gives you the tools that you need,to LIVE LIFE ON LIFES TERMS!!!! This young man has a long road ahaed of him! The things that you should look for are, Is he hangging with old using friends, did he chang his playground? Is he going to his meetings? One thing they tell you in treatment MEETINGS, MEETINGS, MEETINGS!! WE DO MEETINGS 7 DAYS AWEEK! We also attend Al-Anon that way we can have a better understanding of each others addiction. There are some books that you & your doughter should read. Al-Anon's Twelve Steps and Twelve Tradtiods. That would be a good one for your doughter. One for you mom would be, Paths to Recovery Hardcover Al-Anon's Steps, Traditions, and Concepts. Start with them and then you can get a better understanding of it all. You also have to trust your doughter, if you fight with this you will get NO ware! You need to turn this over to Your Higher Power, becuz you can not control any of this! that has to be your first understanding of all this CRAZY illness & that is what this is an illness!!!!!!! I hope this helps you & your family. Good luck to you all!!
