Help for Troubled Teenagers Forum

Help with a 14 y/o Boy!!! - 2007/03/14 00:22 I have a 14 y/o son....he is not violent.....he does not do drugs.....He just gets into trouble constsntly...especially at school. He is not even really disrespectful.....just cannot keep his mouth shut!! He has been on meds for ADD since 4th grade...and his grades are still low....I wonder how much of his issues are behavioral and how much has to do with ADD? His principal called this am and said that 3 of his teachers have had all they can take...If he does not change...they want him sent home!!!! I beg,plead,punish...I do not know what else to do. He is in a very small school, with only 9 kids in his class...most of these kids started with him in kindergarten. I have big fears for next year in high school if we have this much trouble this year.....His Dad and I just feel lost ...like he just does not care anymore, about grades or troubling behavior! Some insight would be great here...If anyone has the same issues.

Re:Help with a 14 y/o Boy!!! - 2007/03/14 12:17 You could have any of the following people help with your teen’s troublesome behavior:
1. An educational consultant that may aid in choosing an appropriate program for your teen
2. Counselor or psychotherapist
3. A teacher or guidance counselor at his/her school to aid with your son’s issues in class

Another option you may choose for your ADD teen is behavior modification. This form of treatment is focuses on helping your teen recognize his strong points in order to let these points grow. Those that support this type of treatment believe that a kind of treatment based solely on medication does not teach a child how to control his/her actions. Behavior modification on the other hand has been known to accomplish this with steady reinforcement. This regular reinforcement is not an easy task to accomplish daily but it may be possible with patience and perseverance.
You may consider getting an ADD coach for your teen. He or she will focus on helping your child utilize coping methods and control behavior. An ADD coach makes use of both cognitive therapy and behavior modification in treatment. Goodluck!
