15 year old girl wants to marry 19 year old - 2008/01/16 22:50 Need some advice really bad on what to do about this. Our daughter is a sophomore in HS and has recently been "seeing" (at school only) a 19 year old boy. He is a senior who is currently failing classes and will probably be there next year.

This boy has convinced her that they should get married. Of course, we said no way. But now she has an even worse attitude at home. She has been skipping classes too. Her father was called to school about some unexcused absences. He decided (with schools approval) to escort her to class each morning. However, in front of him at school she is running up to this boy, telling her father "no" in front of him. Arrrghhh!! What can we possibly do to make her straighten up? We obviously can't convince her that this boy is bad news so what now? Is there anything legally we can do even though they have to attend the same school. She is a minor and he is not.

Re:15 year old girl wants to marry 19 year old - 2008/01/17 21:42 Legally, no laws restrict a 15 year old and a 19 year old from “dating” but a 19 year old male cannot have sex with a 15-year-old (in any state.) Age-of-consent laws exist regarding the age of legal consensual sex. So in this case, if you know that they are engaging in consensual sex this is a point that you can use to keep him legally away from her.
But if not…
Advice from family can be ignored when a teen is really set on her own point of view. You could have someone outside of the family unit comment on her relationship with this guy. When you talk to your teen yourself, telling her that you think her boyfriend may be having a negative effect on her it may just cause her to react with more defiance. Sometimes it just takes a totally objective view from another to help a teen finally realize the truth that stands before her.

Re:15 year old girl wants to marry 19 year old - 2008/01/17 23:23 Thinking that outside help would make her think more about it, yesterday our daughter was talked to by a member of juvenile affairs regarding the 19 year old and skipping class. She promised that she would not skip anymore and she would break it off with the 19 year old and get marriage out of her mind. When she was taken back to school, we find out that she and the boy skipped the last two classes together. Her grades are lowering to the D range. He has been talked to by school officials about leaving her alone but he said "I'm not going to leave her alone."

We contacted juvenile affairs and told him what happened after we left his office. He said that society seems to cater to kids nowdays and if you tell a child "no", then you are cruel. Oh, and he also mentioned to lighten up on her. ?????!!!!! So do we just sit back and let her fail and skip with no punishment? What help is out there for us?! She is obviously on the road to failure in school. She won't listen to reason. She hates rules and she won't follow them because as she says "I don't want to." I'm so upset, I want to cry.
