good kid can't get him to do school work - 2007/12/17 23:01 I'm a single dad, my son is a loving kid, but when it comes to doing any homework he is extremely stressing. No matter how much time I spend with him he continues to not bring work home, I fine out day after projects are already past due. The school is not much of a help.
The worst part is he tests in the above average on all stATE TESTING, and averages 88+ on all school testing, but no homework is killing his average.
Not sure what to do.

Re:good kid can't get him to do school work - 2007/12/18 09:05 When a teenager starts neglecting school work, it can be difficult to steer his attention in the direction you know it should be in. What you can do instead of just the normal reprimanding him for not doing his homework, is find out what there could be in class which would interest him particularly enough in order for him to want to engage in the lessons and the work involved. If there’s a subject or class activity which you notice he likes, try to focus on that and entice him to get more involved in these areas. You could even try talking to a friend of his who does his homework in order to get him interested in doing it as well, more like a study buddy. A lot of teens like to follow what their peers are up to and if a best bud of his makes sure that his homework is done before hanging out, most likely he’ll want to just work along with him. You could also try giving him a goal and a reward for reaching it. For example, if he makes sure he doesn’t miss any project deadlines, you’ll reward him in a certain way which is important to him. Try these positive approaches and see how your teen may respond to them.

Re:good kid can't get him to do school work - 2008/02/19 00:34 i have 3 children. one is 12, one is a 16 year old, bi-polar i have recently written about , my other one is 18 years of age, this kid has never given me a day of trouble, but,,when it comes to going to school, thats where i am having the problem., hes grades are horrible because of attendance. my 16 year old is one who will go to school, and like your child, will not do the work assigned, thats when i learned he had a learning disability, but also with this, if there is a subject he it not interested in, or does not like the teacher, he will not even try to pass the class.
it gets very frustrating. i really understand what youre going through. i can suggest to you as a single parent, that be patient, and constant communication between you, the teacher, and your child is one way that will fix unfinished assignments.
my son finally realized, hey, moms keeping tract of things, and talking with my teacher! that really got him to start thinking.
