Re:out of control 13 yr old girl - 2008/05/19 09:58 If your teenager’s mood swings control the entire atmosphere of your family then you may be feeling at your child’s mercy. It is definitely difficult to deal with an out-of-control teen, this is just the time when your efforts should double, triple even, if one’s initial efforts do not take affect on your teenager.
If, as a parent, you are feeling fed-up with your child’s behavior, you’re not the only one. Surprisingly, your troubled teen may be feeling just as fed-up with her own behavior. An out-of-control teen’s disrespectful acts do not empower them but leave them feeling like they have little or no control over themselves. If you do not provide a set structure for them to latch on to, then it is like they are plunging through fast-paced adolescence without a seatbelt.
As a parent, it is your right to enforce discipline in the home. Your teen shouldn’t feel that she can threaten you with her rough behavior when you try to discipline her for her misbehavior. There are a number of articles that may be of help to you under the section of “Enforcing Discipline” of the website. http://www.troubledteensinfo.com/Discipline_and_Rules/Enforcing_Discipline/
Particularly the articles “Re-defining your house rules”, “Obedience: Making your teenager follow you”, and “Constant Reinforcement: Showing your teen who’s boss” may be of help.
