Help for Troubled Teenagers Forum

Re:seventeen year old son about to be eightteen in th - 2008/06/26 10:39 A number of parents have experienced difficulty as their teens reach this turning age because their teenagers are excited to finally reach legal age and have the freedom they seek; what these teens don’t seem to understand is that with this freedom comes a lot of responsibility as well.
Every parent has the right to tell their son not to do drugs. And that doesn’t matter what age he is. If you knew that he was doing drugs like pot and never said a thing then that’s what would be wrong. So you need not worry yourself with thoughts of being a nag. About his curfew time, since your son is turning 18 soon you could talk through an extended curfew but he must understand that if there are certain requirements or duties he must attend to the next day then it’s his responsibility to be alert enough and able to do them.
But it would be good for you to point out that it isn’t fair for him to be acting in ways which you disapprove of since he is still living under your roof. This fact should be highlighted because if he were 18 and living off on his own he could have more of the freedom that he is forcing. Fact of the matter is that even if he’s almost reaching that legal age, he is still living under his parent’s roof and should respect the type of behavior that they accept. Maybe you or whoever at home he feels most comfortable talking to could point this out to him. After you have a talk about this, maybe he’ll finally catch a clue! Good luck to you!
