Boot Camps

Different types of boot camps are available for your troubled teen. They may be run privately or by the state, but in both cases they tackle physical and mental trials for your child. The general aim of these sorts of facilities is to force direction onto your troubled teenagers while providing an effective short-term answer to their self-destructive behavior.

"Boot camps are normally the answer that parents find to bring their children to terms with reality".

These camps often last from around 20-40 days and are focused on the rebellious attitudes of adolescents. The structure used in these camps can be likened to that of military camps, where physical challenges are used to overcome negative behaviors and instill values of dependability and respect.

The challenges offered may open up doors where new outlooks may begin and new paths may start for your teen. Self-destructive behaviors may be exchanged for more productive ones. The main concept behind these types of camps is that a reality check may be all that your child needs to get back on track and leave self-destructive behavior behind. But a short-term solution to a long-term problem may not be the answer for your teenager if he/she has been acting up for quite some time. A long-term solution may have to include follow-up care/counseling to ensure your child’s progressive development.

Is a boot camp for your child?

You must be fairly sure that your child can take the solid structure and atmosphere of a boot camp if you want him to make the most of his stay. These camps may require the trainees to be in uniform while authority must be firmly recognized as they undergo training in the barracks. If you know that your confused teenager shies away from authority and has generally chosen an indifferent approach to handling with his emotional issues, then a boot camp may not suit his personality.

Another point to take note of is the fact that contact with the outside world/people will be prohibited for a set time period. The nature of the self-destructive behavior may also be grounds for choosing the right place for your child. For example, a history of substance abuse may require a more individually focused, counseling-based program, which a boot camp may not offer.

What’s the success rate of a boot camp?

As mentioned above, a boot camp can provide a reality check for your troubled teenager if he has temporarily lost his way, taking a left turn somewhere where he should have gone right. But if he has been going off in the wrong direction for miles than maybe a short-term solution is not the right choice.

If you believe your child needs a long term solution that will stick then, this alternative may not be what he needs. Though, a boot camp is a good short-term answer to a defiant teenager who needs to learn a lesson about obedience. Be sure to check the safety standards in each camp to make sure these stay within limits and do not threaten to exhaust your child with drill methods.
