How can you encourage a teenager with ADHD? Once your teenager is diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder by a medical professional, it’s up to you to provide your teen with the support and encouragement that he needs in order to battle this disorder. Above all, what your teenager needs you to be is—patient. Of course, your understanding of the disorder itself will help you garner this patience. So, read up! You won’t be able to comprehend why an ADHD teen is acting the way he is without proper knowledge of the disorder itself. You can’t expect a magic cure with a snap of your fingers, but your teenager’s progress will come in time and if you manage the proper patience this will make the ride much less bumpy. Patience is the key for both parent and teenager. And since the disorder itself may make things even harder for an ADHD teen to be patient, as parent the golden patience may lie with you. Make your ADHD teen aware of his unique talents and strengths! Make sure that your ADHD teen is aware that he is a unique individual with his own skills and strengths. Some ADHD teens tend to feel that they are flawed because of the disorder and this is not a healthy way of thinking for a teenager on the road to progress. Reminding your teenager of his positive traits and talents is very important. They should know that being diagnosed with ADHD is not a dead-end. It can be seen as a hurdle that one can get past with determination and hard-work. But never should your teen see it as a dead-end, and if it appears as if this is how he sees it, do your part and remind him otherwise. If your teenager is in the darkness, show him the light that lies at the end of the tunnel.
It’s never too late! Use new knowledge to help your teen in any way you can.
If in the past you may not have been as aware as you are now, do not think that in any way it is too late to utilize that knowledge to the fullest. Most importantly, your teenager needs your presence right now. If you have a chance to get to speak with your teen’s peers in a manner which does not embarrass your teen because of his disorder, it wouldn’t hurt to help them understand exactly what situation your teenager is in by shedding some light on ADHD. Not only will they understand your teenager better but at the same time this may help your teen’s social environment better for his own progress. This is because of the idea that more knowledge gained about ADHD will help those around your teen comprehend his situation better and in turn help provide him with a social environment which may be more comfortable. Knowledge is power. Just make sure that the right people, those surrounding your ADHD teen, know the right information.
