Horses helping troubled teens E-mail

Dogs have already been utilized in aid of troubled teenagers and now horse riding is being introduced in a school in Fife in order to calm down troubled teens in class.

In Glenrothes High School, almost a dozen teenagers have been engaging in a 10-week course at the local stables.

Experts describe that working together with animals may help with the behavior modification of students as they simultaneously work on creating a trustful bond between them and the horses. Horse riding can release unwanted tension that can be built up within a teen, sometimes without him even knowing it. Any anger that could have been brought out in a negative way is put on a more positive track. For a distressed teen to be able to “ride out” his anger or tension is a productive opportunity. Not all teens get to handle their stress in this manner. Teens also get a chance to handle responsibilities in a different setting. When it comes to caring for their horse, a teen may accept certain tasks more easily than at home. This is just the beginning to open them up to other responsibilities in school or at home.

This project was supported by Fife Constabulary and the officers themselves have reportedly witnessed an improvement in the teens.

PC John Robertson told the BBC Scotland news website: "I know these kids and I think it's excellent. I've seen a whole new side to them. They're listening to what's happening, they're taking an interest and they're learning responsibilities."

Even the teenagers themselves could witness an improvement in their behavior.

Alan Penman, a fourteen-year-old who participated, said "I can control it a bit more because before I just used to answer back straight away to the teachers but now I think about it."

The actual concept of utilizing animals, such as horses, stemmed from Carol Wilson—behavior support teacher of the school. Wilson commented "It does modify your behavior when you're working with a big noble beast like a horse. If you want a positive outcome, you have to find something else in yourself. Not aggression but to be calm and assertive."

The teenagers have been brought to the riding stables which are located in Fife near Leuchars, once a week. Before the start of every lesson, teamwork must be practiced as they clean up the stables before riding time.

Glenrothes High School encourages the teenagers to keep on with their horse riding lessons even when the 10-week program has ended.
