Being an “Inside-Out” Parent E-mail

Karyn Gordon is a parent and teen coach who has become an authority on the period of adolescence. She has a private counseling practice in Toronto and also contributes to Slice Network’s The Mom Show. Not only does she give advice on Generation Y issues but she is also the author of “Dr. Karyn’s Guide to the Teen Years”.
Gordon’s recommended style of parenting is being an “Inside-Out” parent. She describes this as “A parent who focuses on whom the child is becoming and less on what he's achieving. More on the effort not the mark. It's also about parents looking inward. What do I need to do differently? How am I contributing to the problem?”
For example, when dealing with a teen issue like sexual promiscuity, Gordon would recommend approaching the issue with a one-on-one talk.
“You choose the right time, when everyone is relaxed. You raise it, not in terms of judging, but trying to get to the root of it, maybe it's pressure or low self-esteem. You might ask, "Can you help me understand?" Then you voice where you're coming from: These are my values and why I've chosen them. But the No. 1 tip is listen first.”

Honesty with your teenagers E-mail

What exactly should you tell your teenager about your past and when should they find out? How honest does a parent have to be?
How can you respond to questions like-- When did you first have sex? Dad, did you smoke pot? What kinds of things did you do when you were a teen?
Some parents may answer honestly, others may not. And like the response of a staff counselor at the Yale Child Study Center, “There isn’t any one-size-fits-all response to your question.”
It can be difficult to discern how honest you should be as a parent with your teenagers. Should you admit to your not so clean experiences in the past? Fearing that you may lose grip on your teenager because of admitting to your own mistakes as an adolescent is normal.

Teen Depression and the effective response from Antidepressants and Psychotherapy E-mail

Many parents have been stressed after having a preliminary antidepressant prescribed to their depressed teenagers and still no response. Now, new research from a recent study may give hope.

Changing medications and simultaneously including behavioral talk therapy in the treatment was the most effective alternative in the study. Merely switching medications brought out a positive effect for a number of teens.

Study author Dr. David Brent, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, said "On average, these kids were ill for two years and no matter which treatment they got, at least 40 percent responded within 12 weeks. I really think the take-home message to families is if you don't respond to the first treatment, don't give up."

Despite past research which found a higher rate of suicidal thoughts and behavior in those teens taking antidepressants, recent research has shown that the benefits of antidepressants are greater than any possible risks for those teenagers under 19 years old.

Predicting psychosis in troubled teenagers E-mail

It appears that doctors can predict psychosis with great accuracy in troubled teens before they may actually develop the full-blown disorders. This is based on a specific combination of risk factors. Once the criteria for risk was noticed, almost 80 percent of the patients were diagnosed with a psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia within just 2 and a half years.
Study researcher Tyrone D. Cannon, Ph.D., of the University of California, Los Angeles, said that those patients who showed early symptoms of psychosis along with a family history of psychotic disease, while exhibiting a decline in social function, were very likely to be diagnosed with the full-blown disorder within a couple years. Unusual thoughts or an unhealthy level of paranoia are examples of early symptoms which may show psychosis.
