Laxative Abuse? - 2006/08/31 23:44 Last week, I found a bunch of laxative pills in my daughter’s room. She has been spending a lot of time in the bathroom lately, particularly rushing there after meals. I’m worried. What exactly does this mean? What is she doing to herself?

Re:Laxative Abuse? - 2006/08/31 23:47 From your description of the scenario, it appears that your daughter is purging by abusing laxatives. When bulimics go through a binge-purge cycle, they first binge on food that they may be consciously avoiding and then after, take in laxatives in order to rid themselves of the food as well as the excess guilt that comes with their “sinful” binges. The mind of a bulimic teen may see laxative abuse as the only way to seek relief from the guilt of “sinful” eating. Laxative abuse is common in bulimics and some anorexics as well. You must confront your teenager’s laxative abuse because this can cause severe dehydration and depletion of important vitamins or minerals that a growing teen’s body needs. It is your teenager’s immediate physical health on the line. Treat her mind to treat her body. Get your teen some psychotherapy to help her deal with purging.
