Is my 16 year old son gay? - 2007/11/21 20:24 My son is 16 and has always been quiet and shy. He is a really lovely lad. He has just told us he is gay. He is so young to decide this. When he was 13/14 he was bullied at school and had problems with friendships. It made him feel different and he was going through puberty at the same time. He started to talk to people on the internet who persuaded him to do things on webcam and introduced him to gay people and websites. He was very vunerable and was easily lead as he had problems with friends and school. They made him feel wanted and as though he belonged so he now feels that he is gay. He now has a good set of friends at college and enjoying life, but is leading a double life one on the internet and a different one at college. He has meet three guys and admits that when they held his hand he was petrified and has now shunned contact with them. How can we help him the internet people seem to have influenced his mind so much.

Re:Is my 16 year old son gay? - 2007/11/23 10:19 If you believe that he is still in a confused state about his true sexuality, it would be helpful if you had him speak with a counselor or therapist. If he is comfortable speaking about his sexuality then you can tell him that the session will be about that. But if you think he may not feel comfortable, you can just let him have a “talk” with the therapist after you’ve informed him/her about the situation in private so that the counselor knows what approach to take.
Being bullied at that tender age, just stepping into adolescence, can be very hard on any teen, and sometimes this results in to turning to a different source for affirmation. At the end of the day, it will really depend on what your son genuinely feels inside once external factors are blurred. Hopefully, these productive talks with a professional can help him determine that.
