self-harm - 2006/08/24 22:59 My son has been cutting himself. His cuts don’t appear to be suicidal, but it’s as if he finds some release in hurting himself. He has slashes on his left arm almost leading up to his wrists. Every time he cuts we go through the same scenario, I can’t help but cry my eyes out seeing my own child hurt himself and he promises not to do it again but somehow we always end up back where we began—in his room with my arms wrapped around him, sobbing because of another cut. I’ve practically locked up all the items that he could hurt himself with, because I know his judgment gets impaired when he feels the frenzied rush of wanting to hurt him self. But he still finds ways to hurt himself.

Re:self-harm - 2006/08/24 23:00 This sounds like time for some real intervention. You must seek professional help. Once your child is putting himself in physical danger, it is a problem which must be given immediate attention. Waiting another week to see if he can keep his promises about not hurting himself could mean him finally making the cut that could be his last. Some parents may be hesitant to seek intervention, but your child is in danger! Intervention is a must.

Re:self-harm - 2006/08/31 23:03 I agree, intervention is a must! My very own daughter struggled with self-harm and depression and it came to a point where she began attempting suicide. Trust me, you’ll be patting yourself on the back that you did something about it now rather than waiting for the time when your teen craves a greater hurt. We finally got our daughter help, but looking back at things I can only wish that we had found help sooner. Get your son the help he needs.
