OC Disorder - 2006/08/24 23:35 My son is displaying a number of traits which appear likened to the obsessive-compulsive disorder described under your list of troubled teen mental disorders. He is quite perfectionistic. If things do not go exactly as he plans then he’ll go beserk. He is a smart boy, he’s been a constant straight-A student so schoolwork has never been a problem but I’m worried that the OC-like behavior is causing him a large amount of stress which he really doesn’t need during adolescence. I think he’s got enough to worry about just being a teenager. How do I deal with this?

Re:OC Disorder - 2006/08/24 23:36 The fact that you are noticing these signs even while your son is making sure that his schoolwork is in top shape is a good thing. Some parents may not be able to give their children’s mental issues proper attention when they are doing fine at school, since they take this as a clear sign of no problems. Also, parents may think that as long as a teenager is doing good in academics that all is well, so they are not as alert of emotional or mental issues. Whether or not you take this issue to a psychotherapist will have to be your call but if you are noticing a lot of stress, even if his characteristics are not diagnosed as obsessive-compulsive disorder, therapy is always beneficial for a person undergoing added stress—adult or teenager.
