Sibling Abuse - 2007/12/02 05:37 Hi,

I have 2 girls 13 and 12...well almost 14, and she is constantly degrading, name calling, hitting. The list goes on and on.

My husband and I are both at wits end with the situation, I don't want to have to resort to sending her to any type of facility.

My mother took her in a few times for short periods of time, but no longer can do it. While she was with my mother she behaved so well. Was an honor role student, her behavior was so appropriate until she came back to stay with us. She is getting progressively worse. She is very aggressive as my 12 yr old is not at all.

I know we HAVE handled some situations wrong. But obviously our disipline isn't working as well as we would like.

I just need some suggetions.

I would like to try different approaches to help resolve the sibling abuse. I have explained it to my daughter that what she does is considered abuse and that it will affect her sister for the rest of her life. That didn't have no affect on how she is treating her sister either.

Its like she don't care about nothing. She feels no remorse or anything as far as I can see.

I seriously need some help.

Constant comparison, which may lead to competition, can also be an issue. In such cases, one sibling may be more aggressive than the other. How your teen reacted when she was taken in on her own by her grandmother may just show how the relationship between the two sisters may have an effect on her behavior. In order to address this directly, counseling can be helpful.
First, taking your 13-year-old to a session with a counselor or therapist would be a good idea. Further on, both sisters may try having some sessions with the therapist together. Outpatient therapy can be very effective in treating teens with troubled behavior.

Re:Sibling Abuse - 2007/12/11 09:06 I would say that she needs some counceling about what is causing this behaviour. I know that first born children usually have more jelousy issues then other birth order children, maybe that has something to do with it? www.eagleranchacademy.com
