Help for Troubled Teenagers Forum

AM I IN DENIAL - 2008/06/05 01:46 MY DAUGHTER IS REALLY A GOOD KID, SHE REALLY IS. BUT, THIS WEEK, TO GET ATTENTION FROM SOMEONE AT SCHOOL WHOM SHE'D HAD AN ISSUE WITH, SHE TOOK 10 ALEVE. DEEP DOWN I KNOW SHE JUST MADE A REALLY BAD DECISION AND I BELIEVE SHE FEELS THAT WAY TOO, BUT HOW DO I CONVINCE HER THAT I AM NOW EXTREMELY WORRIED - IF SHE DID IT ONCE, WHY NOT AGAIN OR SOMETHING ELSE NEXT TIME. SHE IS JUST BRUSHING THIS ALL OFF BECAUSE LUCKILY SHE IS FINE. I DONT WANT TO COME DOWN HARD ON HER BUT I DONT JUST WANT IT TO SEEM LIKE IT WAS JUST A BAD IDEA.

Re:AM I IN DENIAL - 2008/06/05 15:18 The fact that your daughter tried to overdose on medication in order to get attention is a sign that it may be best for you to get her to talk to a counselor. At this age, it has been studied that teens are more receptive to therapy and it can help mold her behavior for the years to come where she may go through other issues that may lead to destructive actions. Hopefully, if you catch her at this age with the proper therapy, she won’t even reach that stage. Definitely the kinds of issues she may be dealing with from the start of adolescence need the proper attention from a counselor or therapist. Her own physical health is at hand and this must be addressed. By disciplining your daughter, you are concerned with her well-being and future, but what may make this hard to understand for your daughter is that she, on the other hand, is concerned with what she may be presently feeling. This is a normal reaction for a teenager. But with patience and understanding, you will be able to get your point across and help her control any self-destructive impulses in the future.
